The Common Admission Test is known as CAT and it is all-India test conducted by the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) as an entrance exam for the management programes(for the admission to the Post-graduate with IIM OR with other top MBA Colleges and Insititutes in India.) of its seven business schools (IIMA, IIMB, IIMC, IIML and others Institutions) all over india.It was started in the 1960s and was initially the preserve of the IIMs alone.The new entrants in 2011 included six IITs, Faculty of Management Studies, Delhi University, and Xavier Institute of Management, Bhubaneshwar.
This year,Common Admission Test (CAT) will be conducted from October 11, 2012 to November 6, 2012. CAT 2012 will be coordinated by the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Kozhikode on behalf of Indian Institutes of Management.
The CAT score is used separately by each institute along with other parameters i.e. academic performance, work experience, written assessment and interview performance etc to select candidates. The weightage assigned to CAT score may differ for each institute. Candidates are advised to read the weightage process and breakup for each institute on their respective website.
From this year onwards management schools of the IIT’s have also decided that admission to their post graduate management programs will be done through cat 2013.

Important dates of CAT exam 2012
Sale of vouchers will start from July 30, 2012 and will continue till September 17, 2012. Aspirants can register between July 30, 2012 to September 19, 2012. The test days this year are from October 11, 2012 to November 6, 2012. The results will be announced on January 9, 2013.
There will be two Sections in CAT 2012
- Quantitative ability and Data interpretation (QA & DI)
- Verbal ability and Logical reasoning (VA & LR)
It will be a 140-minute exam. Candidates will have 70 minutes to answer 30 questions in each section, although, the number of questions and difficulty level remains the same.
Eligibility for CAT entrance exam 2012

- The candidate must be a graduate with 50% marks or equivalent CGPA (45% in case of SC/ST/DA/PWD) or possess an equivalent qualification recognized by the ministry of HRD, Government of India.

Paper Pattern and Duration of CAT Exam 2012:

- The duration of the test is 2 hours and 30 minutes including initial 15 minute tutorial. No breaks will be given during the test. The test consists of questions that evaluate a candidate’s quantitative, verbal, and logical & data interpretation abilities. Therefore, there are a total of three sections in the test. There will be about 60 questions in the test.
- At the test venue, each candidate will be seated at a desk with a computer terminal and he/she will be provided with a scratch paper for calculations. After the test, candidate must leave the scratch paper at the desk. Rough work cannot be done on any other paper/sheet, as nothing will be allowed inside the testing room.
CAT 2012 Marks and Scoring:
The CAT score will be calculated as per the formula, S = 3R – 1W, where S is the CAT score, R is the number of right answers and W is the number of wrong answers. Negative marks will be given for each wrong answer. The percentage of marks obtained by the candidate in the bachelor’s degree would be calculated based on the practice followed by the university/institution from where the candidate has obtained the degree.
CAT 2012 Short-listing:
List of shortlisted candidates for the next level of slection will be made available on the individual IIM websites. Each IIM will send interview letters to the candidates it has short-listed.
